About The Role
Carbon Mapper is seeking a Machine Learning Scientist to support the research and development of next-generation machine learning methods for Earth science and remote sensing applications. This role will apply machine learning approaches to remote sensing and Earth science data, develop models to improve existing data processing pipelines, and explore new application areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop and adapt algorithms for methane and carbon dioxide retrieval, plume detection, source attribution, and emissions rate quantification
· Process, clean, and analyze large-scale geospatial datasets
· Evaluate model performance across different populations, environments, or subregions to identify performance variation
· Assess model sensitivity and interpretability
· Maintain training datasets used for algorithm development and benchmarking
· Collaborate with research scientists and engineers to release updated model versions
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Must-Have Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, physical science, mathematics, geoscience, engineering, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with machine learning libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Experience processing and analyzing large-scale geospatial or remote sensing datasets.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative, evolving work environment.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
· Master’s or Ph.D. in a related field.
· Experience maintaining production or operational machine learning systems.
· Experience applying object detection or classification methods to satellite or remote sensing datasets.
· Experience conducting exploratory data analysis to improve training datasets and model performance.
· Record of research publications, technical reports, or open-source contributions.
· Familiarity with cloud computing environments such as AWS.
· Interest in climate science, emissions monitoring, or Earth science applications.
Location
Carbon Mapper is headquartered in Pasadena, California, but we embrace the virtual office and are continuing to grow our team across the United States.
Compensation
The total compensation for this opportunity includes a base salary range of $120,000 – $145,000. This is our target compensation range and is subject to multiple factors including level, experience, and location. As you go through our interview process, our recruiter will work with you to identify a competitive base salary within the proposed range.
